Ingredients
  

  • 12 oz fresh or frozen cranberries (one bag)
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup water or orange juice for added flavor
  • 1 teaspoon orange zest this is optional
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon this is optional
  • Pinch of salt

Method
 

Prepare the Cranberries
  1. Rinse the cranberries under cold water and pick out any soft or damaged ones.
Cook the Cranberry Sauce
  1. In a medium saucepan, combine the water (or orange juice) and sugar. Stir over medium heat until the sugar dissolves, forming a simple syrup.
Add the Cranberries
  1. Stir in the cranberries and bring the mixture to a gentle boil.
Simmer
  1. Reduce the heat to a simmer. Cook for 10-12 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the cranberries burst and the sauce thickens.
Enhance the Flavor
  1. If desired, stir in orange zest, cinnamon, and a pinch of salt during the last few minutes of cooking.
Cool the Sauce
  1. Remove the saucepan from heat and let the cranberry sauce cool to room temperature. The sauce will continue to thicken as it cools.
